Cemetery Junction

Cemetery Junction is a film about escape. Escape from dull surroundings and the inevitable monotony of working class life. The previous two sentences I have written make it sound rather depressing! but it is a comedy/drama, and it IS rather funny.

Cemetary Junction is a dead end town in Reading, filled with people with low aspirations. The protagonist, Freddie, however, wants to make something of his life. The female protagonist, Julie (pictured above) also feels trapped in her world and wants to escape it too.

It is written by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, so a lot of the humour is quite blunt and offensive, you can see a lot of Gervaisisms in the characters. Gervais has a role in it as the hard working father, it is amusing watching him as he can only seem to play…himself. The blunt humour in some of the characters make some of the interactions between characters seem unrealistic. With that style of humour, everything can become so ironic, that all words seem to lose meaning, although it can be amusing at times.

There was another character in the film called ‘Snork’. He was fat, unattractive, slightly socially inept. It upset me a bit as I feel because he was ‘fat’ and ‘unattractive’ he had to play a slightly socially inept character. He couldn’t be the protagonist, who dreams of leaving, and be charming and charismatic, as he isn’t typically attractive. What is suggests in life and films, gorgeous model-types take the lead roles, average people are in the background.

The film resonated with me as I always dream of leaving my dead end town. It’s entirely possible, it is only myself that is stopping me. Julie, she wants to see the world and take lots of photographs…that is just like me. It’s a bit like the film Billy Liar. Billy dreams of leaving his dull job and starting a new life, but there always seems to be something holding him back.

And there is always music in the air.

I have been watching Twin Peaks en masse since they finally released the second series in the UK. It is 20 years old...like me!

Twin Peaks is about a small town where Laura Palmer, a high school student is myseriously murdered. Agent Cooper, from the FBI, comes to Twin Peaks to investigate the murder and we find it is a dark town, with many secrets.

I love Twin Peaks because:

1.) It is awesome.

2.) The weird and wonderful characters.

3.) The hilarity of it, as well as the genuinly haunting moments. And neither takes away from the other.

I am only 4 episodes from finishing it! This makes me a bit sad as I don't want to leave the Twin Peaks world. There is the prequel film 'Fire Walk With Me' but I have heard it is a bit hit and miss.
